Dumpster Rental Tips

Dumpster Rental Tips

Step 1: Why do you need a Dumpster?

In most cases you need to Rent A Dumpster to put sizeable quantities of unwanted material such as residential trash, construction debris, green waste, or even recycable materias as well.

Step 2: Can I put the dumpster on the street or driveway?

If the dumpster is put on the street, then we will require a minimum of 70 feet of curbside footage to release the dumpster. If the dumpster is placed in the driveway, then the driveway will have to be greater than the length of the dumpster. Once placed in the driveway, the dumpster cannot come in contact with city property such as the sidewalk or street.

Note: Given the length of the roll-off truck, the width of the street should be wide enough for the roll-off truck to make a 3-point turn.  View the generic video.

Step 3: Will I need a Permit

Most cities require a permit before you can place the dumpster on city property (the street) and in some cases you might need a permit to place on your property as well (your driveway). It's best if you contact your local city administration office before you rent a dumpster.

Step 4: What size Dumpster do I need?

Dumpsters are measured in cubic yards. One cubic yard is equivalent to washer machine 3x3x3. Our rental dumpsters range from 10 cubic yards to 45 cubic yards. Dumpster dimensions are listed below.

  • 10 yard dumpster - 16'L 8'W 2'H
  • 20 yard dumpster - 16’L 8’W 4’H
  • 30 yard dumpster - 22'L 8'W 5'H
  • 40 yard dumpster - 22'L 8'W 6'H

Special dumpsters used for dirt, concrete, asphalt, rock, gravel etc.

Step 5 – Now that we know the size of the dumpster, what are the prices?

Dumpster rental prices are based on a base rental price along with a weight fee typical know as a "Tonnage" fee.

Dumpsters known as "Lowboy" are sized to carry dirt, asphalt, concrete, rock, etc. Lowboy dimensions are typically 2ft high x 8ft wide x 16ft long.

For general household material, construction and demolition debris, the use of 20 cubic yard to 40 cubic yard dumpters are great for these types of project.

There are typically two ways to be charge for dumpster rentals – Tonnage fee and/or Base rental price. When renting a dumpster there is always a base rental fee. A tonnage fee is applied if your trash contents exceeds the applied weight limit for that dumpster size. As an example, $350.00 is the rental fee and the applied weight limit is 4 tons.

Here is an example for a 30 cubic yard container for construction project.

I’ll rent you a 30 cubic yard dumpster for $350.00 with a 4 ton limit for your trash contents. For every ton above 4 tons, the price is $62.00 per ton. So the roll-off truck and dumpster are weighed at the landfill prior to dumping the contents of trash. The total tonnage is 8 tons which exceeded the 4 ton limit by 4 tons. At $62.00 per ton (4x62) you now have an added $248.00 going to the dumpster rental company. Your combined total for the dumpster rental is now $598.00 !!!! It's very important to compare tonnage fees for each dumpster rental company.
